Reminiscing March

Julia Tapia April 2014

Girl Scout Day is next on March 12th, which celebrates the first Girl Scout troop established in 1912. To commemorate this day, go out and support your local troop by buying a box of Samoas, the most popular seller! Pi Day, March 14th, allows us to rejoice in the Greek letter and mathematical number symbol pi, or 3.14. Eat some pie and allow your inner math enthusiast to escape! Saint Patrick’s Day is March 17th and revolves around the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland, Saint Patrick. The 17th is now associated with shamrocks, gold, luck, and leprechauns. You may be wondering, “Why the shamrocks?” The shamrocks are used to represent the Holy Trinity, The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. And to clarify, the four-leaf clover myth, yes they do exist, but they grow one in every ten thousand, which is why they are considered to be so lucky. And why the pinching? The pinching idea is American tradition, which stems from the idea that those who wore green were invisible to the leprechauns who pinch whoever is in their sight. So, the pinching is a reminder to wear green because the leprechauns may get you. So, don’t forget your green on the 17th! The first day of spring, the 21st of March, is the Vernal Equinox when the day and night are exactly equal. The 21st is also International Earth Day, adopted by the UN in 1971, and is a perfect opportunity to spread the word about recycling, conservation, and restoration to keep this beautiful Earth green. Enjoy your March festivities!
